Andre Gide (1869.1951).

Autograph letter signed to Marcel Jouhandeau.

One page in-12°. Stamped and canceled autograph envelope.

Paris, Saturday evening (July 17, 1926).

““From Guéret where I will be on Wednesday” – you tell me. Your letter is not dated and I have torn the envelope. I don't know if this Wednesday has passed... I would like my affection to precede you to Guéret and welcome you . Why this sadness? Did something bruise you? Or is it just a sadness “without reason”, like that of Verlaine? Can my friendship rock her? You promise me a “long, long letter” – that’s because you feel – don’t you – that I’m waiting for it with all my heart. I am extremely tired and will leave Paris in a few days, to try to get some sleep again in the afternoon. My mail will be forwarded to the NRF. I cannot give you my address, because I still do not know where I will go. Your André Gide.”
