"Dear Sir, Here is the piece you were kind enough to request from me for the twelfth month of your little poetic almanac. May it please you and not detract too much from your book. I would be grateful if you could send me a proof before printing, perhaps to correct a few minor imperfections and ensure the accuracy of my text. Would you be so kind as to send it to the Château de la Roque Baignard , near Lambremer, Calvados? Please accept, Sir, my sincere thanks and my heartfelt literary regards."

Returning to France in the spring of 1896, after his honeymoon with his cousin Madeleine, Gide learned that he had been elected mayor of La Roque-Baignard. While he conscientiously carried out his duties, he refused to become involved in politics. During the summer, he wrote El Hadj , which was published in the journal Le Centaure, and completed Les Nourritures terrestres . He served as mayor of La Roque-Baignard from 1896 to 1900 and owned the château (which was sold in 1900).
