Jouhandeau and his intriguing proposal to Gide.

My dear Jouhandeau , But no, but no, you are not mistaken. It is now that you are mistaken in fearing that you have displeased me with a proposal which, on the contrary and at any other time, would have greatly appealed to me. But I received your letter two days before a fairly serious operation which has kept me busy since Christmas; I am just beginning to understand that I am still alive , to reconnect with the outside world. This planned evening must be postponed until much later. I will return to Cuverville as soon as I am able to travel; until then I will hardly leave my chaise-longue or armchair, and if you have a moment, you will please me by coming to tell me that the misunderstanding caused by my silence no longer lasts. No need to announce yourself. Kind regards. Andre Gide. »
