Hamburg. January 6, 1938

Superb letter from Derain enriched with an original drawing depicting him in a self-portrait smoking the Dunhill pipe that has just been given to him.

"Dear friend, Thank you so much for thinking of me and sending me this magnificent Dunhill, which is so good. I'm savoring it deliciously while thinking of you, which keeps me from getting too lazy and lingering over it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Yours, A. Derain."

In 1938, Derain, along with Arp and Picasso, participated in the anti-Nazi committee for the defense of Otto Freundlich, a German painter and sculptor and pioneer of abstraction, one of whose sculptures appeared on the cover of the exhibition "Degenerate Art"
