Andre Derain (1880.1954)

Autograph letter signed to a friend

One folio page (215 x 275 mm).

Hamburg. January 6, 1938

Superb letter from Derain enriched with an original drawing showing him in a self-portrait smoking the Dunhill pipe which has just been given to him.

“Dear friend, Thank you very much for thinking of me and sending me this magnificent Dunhill which is so good. I savor it deliciously while thinking of you, which prevents me from becoming too lazy by lingering on smoking it. I thank you with all my heart. Your A. Derain. »

In 1938, Derain, with Arp and Picasso, participated in the anti-Nazi committee for the defense of Otto Freundlich, a German painter and sculptor who pioneered abstraction, one of whose sculptures appears on the cover of the exhibition “Degenerate Art”
