« My dearest Victor, a friend of mine, happier than I, will send you her love. Only her kindness can match your genius.
You know how much I love you. I talk about you every day – I think about you all the time – with Lamartine every time I see him – but I could never admire and love him as I love and admire you.
I protest to you that the day the ball and chain of work leaves my foot for a moment, I will make but a leap, from here to Marine Terrace and never, I swear to you, will a mistress, however beloved she may be, have been held upon a more loving heart.
Give my warmest regards to the friend who wrote me the four charming lines I received – Oh, if I hadn't been afraid of being indiscreet, what mysteries of the denouement I would have revealed! Oh, when you return, my friend, and I hope it will be soon, what joy for my heart, whose virile part is entirely with you.
I love and admire you as always, my dear Victor. To you, Alex Dumas .
