Alberto GIACOMETTI (1901.1966)

Autograph letter signed to André Breton.

Two ½ in-8° pages. Stamped and canceled autograph envelope. Paris. August 23, 1959.

« I think that the “suspended ball” and the “invisible object”, that’s its name, are among the most appropriate things.”

Very beautiful letter from Giacometti to his friend Breton relating to the International Surrealism Exhibition, EROS, organized by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp at the Daniel Cordier Gallery during the winter of 1959-60.

“Dear André, Thank you for your letter that I found here when I returned to Paris these last few days and I regret my long delay in responding to you. Your letter gave me great pleasure. I agree in advance with your choice for my representation in the exhibition that you are planning, but I think that the "suspended ball" and the "invisible object", that is indeed its name, are among the most more indicated. The project published in Labyrinthe, on the other hand, seems to me to be very difficult to achieve and I believe that it would be of very little interest. It’s a drawing that accompanies a text “The Sphinx, the dream and the death of T.” I think you read it at the time. It is impossible for me to say anything about this in this letter; We could talk about it when you return to Paris. In any case, I would be very happy to see you as soon as possible upon your return. See you very soon I hope and very affectionately, also from Annette to Élisa and to you. Alberto Giacometti. »
