“Dear M. I am sorry that I was not able to meet you in Paris . All the more angry as your previous letter which I read, reread and kept had interested me greatly. I would have liked to talk about it with you. In any case, I will be happy to meet you on your next visit. Notify me of your arrival. Until then, I will gladly receive, at the NRF, the manuscripts you are talking about. What to read? I don't really know. Have you read René Char's Feuillets d'Hypnos. He is our greatest poet. Also read Noël Devaulx's Auberge Parpillon (Gallimard) and Le Pressoir Mystique (Cahiers du Rhône). It's top notch. In any case, I thank you for your letter and I ask you to believe in my feelings of sympathy. AC.”

A native of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, René Char lured Camus to his beloved Provence and unearthed the Domaine de Palerme, this large country house near his home. The earth and the light instantly reminded Camus of his beloved Algeria. The Char/Camus friendship continued under the sun of Vaucluse and Lubéron. After a few years at the Domaine de Palerme, Camus finally settled in Lourmarin.
